"OSMANLI'DAN CUMHURİYET'E SU, HAMAM VE KAPLICA KÜLTÜRÜ" Panel
On December 10, 2024, Balıkesir University (BAÜN) Faculty of Science and Letters, Faculty of Tourism, Ottoman Heritage Application and Research Center, and Tourism Research and Application Center jointly organized a panel titled “Water, Bath, and Spa Culture from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic.” The panel, held at the Malazgirt Conference Hall of the BAÜN Atatürk Congress and Culture Center, was attended by BAÜN Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih Satıl, Dean of the Faculty of Tourism Prof. Dr. Ahmet Köroğlu, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Letters Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Şahin, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Sibel Ergün, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts Prof. Dr. Selvihan Kılıç Ateş, Director of the Institute of Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Bayram Şahin, Director of the Ottoman Heritage Application and Research Center Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serap Sunay, Director of the Tourism Research and Application Center Prof. Dr. Gülay Özdemir Yılmaz, academic and administrative staff, and students. The opening speeches were delivered by Balıkesir University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih Satıl and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Letters Prof. Dr. Halil İbrahim Şahin. Moderated by Prof. Dr. Gülay Özdemir Yılmaz, an academic from the Faculty of Tourism, the panel featured presentations by Prof. Dr. Düriye Bozok, an academic from the Faculty of Tourism, on “The Place of Bath Culture in Tourism from Past to Present,” and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serap Sunay, Director of the Ottoman Heritage Application and Research Center and a faculty member of the Faculty of Science and Letters, spoke on "Healing Centers in the Ottoman Empire: Thermal Baths,“ Gülfidan Tokgöz, Lecturer at Bigadiç Vocational School, with her paper titled ”The Search for Healing Across Generations from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic,“ and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nagihan Baysal Yurdakul from Ege University with her paper titled ”Water in Turkish Folk Medicine."
